For the last 12 years Joanne and I have had white dinnerware. Plain white. And no, not that stylish white that has come out that everyone is in love with. Those are nice, but I so can’t get myself to have white dishes anymore.
Ours were round, and had a small design on the edges, still in white.
If I tell you I was sick at looking at them, it would be an understatement.
And even though they were white, they still didn’t really match what I had going on in the kitchen. It was decorated in coffee designs, with creme colors.
It just didn’t work.
So when we moved and sold everything, I couldn’t get those white dishes out of my house fast enough!
Modern Designed Required
My design style has always been classic. I want something more modern, and I want huge pops of bright colors. I need it. Color is my happy place, why wouldn’t I want that at home? And, truth be told, I need the biggest spot of happy in the kitchen. I struggle to cook, and it’s not that I’m not good at it… I’m awesome at creating. I just don’t enjoy it.
So when I looked at dinnerware, I knew I wanted color. And, I like the colors of my house to flow. So Joanne and I had to come up with kitchen colors we could agree on.
After checking out the rug we’re using for our color inspiration in the living room, we settled on the main colors for the color being blue and yellow. Not only does it match what we’re doing now, but we needed it to work should we change up colors, rugs, or color schemes.
Keeping our colors in mind, the first place I wanted to shop was The Rachael Ray store. Her pieces are so modern, and the variety of colors she has could not be more perfect for the direction we’re headed with our new place.
Choosing Dinnerware
Call it crazy, but I had some requirements for dinnerware.
- Large plates. Joanne doesn’t like her food to touch.
- Modern style.
- Bright color options.
- REAL mugs. No tiny little things. I like my coffee.
- Right size salad plates, perfect for Zadey.
What I found was the round and square dinnerware. OH.MY.GOSH!
These are more prefect than I could begin to tell… but, I’m going to try!
Rachael Ray Round & Square Dinnerware Features
Okay, first, we have to talk color options. Because that was the number one thing I was looking at. It HAS to match my color scheme ideas. And, Rachael has nothing but modern colors for the round and square dinnerware: Lemon Zest, Blue Raspberry, Green Apple, Purple, and Tangerine.
Regardless of the color you choose, you’ll get all the same amazing features.
- The top of the plates are round, while the bottoms are squared off.
- The plates, salad plates, and bowls are very deep.
- The plates and salad plates have a nice lip on the side to keep sauces from running off the plate.
- The mugs are DEEP. They are not your standard 8 oz. No, they’re 14 oz.
- The handles on the mugs are perfect to place for fingers in and hold the mug.
- Everything is two-toned.
I can only assume by these designs that not only is Rachael Ray an awesome cook, but she has got to like her coffee, too. Because only a coffee drinker could design a mug with a dinnerware set so perfectly.

For the first time in my life, I actually have mugs that I will use that match my dinnerware set. Typically I throw these in the cabinets and ignore them.
And, let me elaborate on the depth here, because I really have never seen anything like it with dinnerware.
Not only is this really practical, it really adds a lot to the design of the plates.
Looking at the dinnerware from the top is when you begin to appreciate the design. The top outer edges are rounded, while the bottoms are all squared off. This gives them a very unique shape, and design.
The other thing you can see, from the top two pictures, is that the dinnerware is two-toned. White is on the bottom/inside and the outside is lemon zest. I love this because it makes them feel so much more crisp and clean.
As silly as it might sound, I cannot begin to tell you how happy I am to have beautiful dinnerware. After staring at ugly white for the last 12 years, I’m so excited about the burst of color these will bring to my kitchen!
