How I Do It: Twins Sleeping

How I Do It: Twins Sleeping

In this post series, I’m answering the question of “How do I do it?

Sleep, precious sleep.

I’m sure you think that I am some sleep deprived, poor Mother of twins. Stop it. I’m well rested, and have been since they came home from the hospital. While they were in the NICU, not so much as I was up in the middle of the night to drive to the other side of town. But, I don’t have to do that anymore. And I only had to do it for a week, anyway.

So, let’s talk sleep since we’re so good at it.

Sleeping TwinsMost nights, the boys sleep in a Pack ‘N Play bassinet on my side of the bed. Yes, they co-sleep. No, this is not recommended by the AAP. No, I do not care what the AAP thinks. Moving on…

Even though they have more than doubled their birth weight, they actually still fit side-by-side in the bassinet portion of the Pack ‘N Play. And there they sleep, swaddled.

Some nights, one will need extra cuddling and then one, or both, will sleep with Joanne and I.

Because they are still so little, and wake up in the middle of the night; they still sleep in our room. And until they sleep through the night, they will continue to do so.

Okay, truthfully, they’ll probably stay in our room for at least their first year. That’s what I did with Zadey, that’s what I’m comfortable with.

We have for them bunk bed cribs. Yes, they’re awesome. Unfortunately, they don’t like them. I have gotten them to do nothing more than a short nap in them. We’re seriously considering selling the bunk bed cribs and purchasing two normal cribs.

During the day, they nap in their bouncy seats or on the couch. Because we have an office/playroom that’s separate from the living room I prefer to have them in the bouncy seats next to me at the computer.

I like to have them near me during the day because I have the windows opened, and the lights on. And I think this helps them to keep their days and nights straight. I also don’t hesitate to make noise, vacuum, and play music. Babies need to learn how to sleep through anything, and mine do.

Sleeping TwinsWhen they were super little, and first home from the hospital, they could share a single bouncy seat. It was so cute. And they seemed to sleep very well this way as it’s what they were used to.

However, a bit of weight gain on both their parts and this option was gone. They now sleep in their own bouncy seats. And get their together time during play time on a play mat, or whenever they’re awake and I can have them spend time together.

If most of my day is a cleaning day, I have them sleep on the couch.

For some reason, I feel like I have to constantly change where they’re at. Not all day long but from day to day. I don’t want them to get sick of any one place, and I want them to be as comfortable as possible.

I wonder if they don’t like the cribs because they are separated? Since they are used to sleeping together, maybe it’s too cold and alone in the single crib? My friends twins slept in one crib together until almost a year. Then she separated them. I say go with what is comfortable to you. I can’t imagine separating them this little! They have been together their whole life!
